Breast cancer, No. 1 cancer among women, surges in new cases each year, but early detection improves survival... Survival rates vary by metastasis, etc.

The incidence of breast cancer in Korea has increased every year, with 24,806 patients as of 2020, ranking first among all women's cancers. In particular, it is 3,000 more than 21,722 thyroid cancers, which have the second largest number of patients among women's cancers, and 11,392 more than twice as many as colon cancers, which are the third.

The cause of breast cancer is not yet clear. However, the main triggers include exposure period, family history, age, obesity, and nutritional status of female hormones. Angelina Jolie's BRCA1 and 2 gene mutations are known to cause breast cancer in more than 60%.

Usually, breast cancer has a high 5-year survival rate of 95% in stage 1 to stage 2. However, the survival rate drops to 75% in stage 3 and to 44.5% when cancer spreads to other organs. As cancer progresses, the survival rate is almost halved. Therefore, breast cancer can nearly double the survival rate if treated through early detection, so screening is important.
